AKINS HIGH SCHOOL
TEACHER OF THE YEAR
(Teacher of the Year is voted by the entire campus; Must have a minimum of 3 years at the campus)
Christina Garcia-Mata (RIP) was the AVID Coordinator at Akins High School and currently teaches AVID and SEL. She was originally from El Paso, Texas, where she graduated from the University of Texas at El Paso with a B.A. in History and a minor in Chicano Studies. She had been a proud Akins Eagle since 2006. She's taught Teen Leadership, US History, AVID, and SEL. When not in the classroom, Mrs. Garcia-Mata enjoyed traveling, attending concerts, practicing yoga, and spending quality time with friends and family.
(We lost Ms. Garcia-Mata in a tragic hiking accident in July 2021. We miss her so much!)
2017-2018
AKINS HIGH SCHOOL
TEACHER OF PROMISE
(Teacher of Promise is awarded to a first year teacher)
Jennifer Beam went to the University of Texas at Austin in pursuit of a Bachelors of Science Degree in Geological Sciences with a focus on geophysics. After exploring different areas of geology, Ms. Beam realized that during class, she always imagined herself in the professor's place teaching! She decided to pursue certification to teach high school math and physics which led her to Akins High School. Ms. Beam is currently finishing up a Masters in Education at Texas State and could not be happier to be an Akins Eagle
