Mariachi Ensembles
Varsity Mariachi
The Varsity mariachi represents the flagship performance and competitive ensemble within our school and regional program. It's focused on fundamental mechanics, a varsity ensemble operates like a high-level orchestra combined with an intense show choir. Members undergo competitive auditions testing advanced sight-reading, vocal range, technical proficiency, and rhythmic precision across complex regional styles (huapango, polka, son jalisciense). The group serves as the public face of the program, performing at showcase galas, community events, and state or national competitions. Nearly every instrumentalist is expected to sing. Mariachi features polished multi-part vocal harmonies, powerful lead soloists, and stylized gritos. Members wear complete, custom-fitted trajes de charro (fitted suits with grecas or botonadura, moño, and sombrero) for formal performances. Requirements for this ensemble are that you are enrolled in a performing music ensemble for a grade (band, guitar, orchestra, choir, etc). Mariachi will meet 4th period and after school hours for MANDATORY weekly rehearsals. Rehearsals and performances are MANDATORY! Performances will coincide with Guitar Concerts. Auditions and chair placements are held regularly on an as-needed basis throughout the school year.
Non-Varsity Mariachi
The newest ensemble group. Each student will learn in the areas of fundamental playing technique, posture, mariachi culture and ensemble performance. This mariachi group class is an energetic, community-centered environment designed to introduce essential instruments, traditional rhythms, and ensemble dynamics—even for those with little to no prior musical background. This Mariachi will meet 8th period. There are only 2 MANDATORY concerts with rehearsals a day or two before, they are Winter and Spring. Performances will coincide with Guitar Concerts. Additional rehearsals outside of class will be scheduled.
Mariachi Class Materials
- You will need your own instrument: Violin, Guitar, Trumpet
- You will need your own instrument materials: bow, rosin, strings, picks, slide grease, valve oil
- Instruments provided are: Guitarron & Vihuela.
